The Power of Relationship

At the beginning of March, I had the privilege of visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina, where I met Sandra, our dedicated family worker in Sarajevo. Sandra works closely with the families we support, and as we talked, it became clear that while practical aid like food and firewood is essential, it is the deep, personal relationships she builds with the mothers that truly make a lasting impact.

Many of the women we help are left alone with the responsibility of their children. They fight to give their families a better future, but it is often a lonely battle. I listen to them, advise them, and give them hope. It is incredible to see how even a small amount of support can give them the strength to continue.

Sandra visits sponsor families every month, bringing food and necessities, but her greatest gift is the time she gives—listening, sharing life, and offering encouragement. “I remember a mother who cried when I visited. She told me it meant everything to her to know that someone saw and understood her struggle. In that moment, I felt just how important this work truly is,” Sandra shares.

Connecting Over Bosnian Coffee

Part of our culture is drinking strong Bosnian coffee. When Sandra comes, we enjoy a cup of coffee together. There’s something therapeutic about that coffee. When you drink it, you open up to the person you’re sharing it with. Mother, sponsor family in Sarajevo

For many of the mothers, Sandra is one of the few people they can truly trust. Often isolated and without visitors, her presence brings comfort and companionship.

Sandra understands that supporting these women goes beyond providing for their physical needs. She knows when to offer practical help and when they simply need a break. “I take them out, without their children or spouse, just to give them space to breathe,” she shares. “We have coffee, talk, or go for a walk. Sometimes, I organize activities like a spa night with nail polish and face masks. It means so much for them to have time for themselves.”

Hope for the Next Generation

Sandra’s connection with the families doesn’t just impact the women—it gives hope to the children. While many parents feel trapped in their situation, Sandra believes education can pave the way to a brighter future. “I cheer for the next generation and always tell the children: ‘Study, study. That’s your path to a better future,” Sandra shares. She emphasizes the crucial role that sponsors play. Through their support, the families and children receive food, school supplies, and warmth in the winter—but more importantly, they receive hope. “It’s about more than financial support. When a mother knows that someone in another country is thinking about her family, it gives her strength.”

During my visit, I saw firsthand how vital these relationships are. Through love, trust, and the warmth of a shared cup of coffee, lives are being transformed—one family at a time.
