Called to Serve: Maksym’s Journey Begins
"The war has been going on for three years, and people are exhausted, both mentally and physically."
Maksym Zolotaryov, 32, from Lysychansk, Luhansk region, knows the deep wounds of war. First displaced in 2014, he returned home only to flee again in 2022 when the full-scale invasion began. "By God's grace, I was able to go to Rivne," he said.
Seeing the suffering around him, Maksym couldn’t turn away. Quoting from scripture, he shared how the ability to help comes with responsibility, and choosing not to act would weigh on his conscience.
Compelled by faith, he stepped forward to serve—bringing hope where pain and loss seemed unbearable.
“If anyone knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them”James 4:17
Finding Purpose in Rivne
In Rivne, Maksym found a new church family and connected with Mission Without Borders (MWB). Instead of seeking a fresh start abroad, he felt called to serve.
"At that time, other opportunities opened up for me, but in my heart, there was a desire to be useful," he said. Joining MWB's relief efforts, Maksym helped distribute aid and support displaced families. He also travelled to the frontline, bringing much-needed supplies and encouragement to those who had lost everything.
"I know what it's like to wake up and have to leave your house with only the clothes on your back—and never return," he shared.

Bringing Light in the Darkness
"The war brought so much grief and pain," Maksym reflected. "But I see that the light in people's hearts has not yet gone out."
Through MWB's work, families receive not just food and shelter but the hope found in Christ. For Maksym, his role is not only about providing practical aid but also about sharing faith and strengthening the weary.
Stanislav Boyko, MWB’s Christian Outreach Manager, said, “Maksym understands people’s suffering firsthand. He speaks from the heart, offering support and compassion because he has walked a similar path. He is a vital link between those in need and those who can help.”
A Life Saved for a Purpose
Maksym has faced more than war—he has also battled cancer. "I was powerless to change anything on my own," he recalled. "But I prayed, my church prayed, I underwent surgery and treatment, and now the cancer is in remission. God’s hand was with me."
He knows his life was spared for a reason.
